Founder Story
Hi, I'm Arthur, and I created Revspin.
Well, it first started out as the "Table Tennis Database", or tabletennisdb.com. Back in 2008, if you wanted to research equipment, the only place to go was online forums, the rare blog post, or pick the brains of the old guys at the local table tennis club.
I was a young Computer Science student at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, and I've always loved combining my passions into projects, and I thought I could definitely make a website to help players around the world to research and find the right equipment for them, so I got to work.
But I was too late.
Six months into development, I was beaten to the finish line. Tabletennisratings.com launched as the first table tennis review platform. It was made using an out-of-the-box website builder, with a ratings plugin installed. It wasn't bad, but I thought my custom platform could do better. I needed to hustle so I pulled a lot of late nights at my desk, and about a month later, I launched tabletennisdb.com.
A lot has happened since 2008.
The platform quickly grew in popularity, we sponsored the North American Teams Championships in 2012, rebranded to Revspin, formed a Revspin Team at the Joola Teams Tournament, launched the Revspin Shop , and now Revspin reaches almost a million users each year, with over 12-million page views, with over 44,000 reviews and counting. I'm so grateful for the community support and engagement in making it such a useful resource.
What's next for Revspin?
Flying solo, I've spent thousands of hours coding, designing, and maintaining the platform on my evenings and weekends, and there's still so much more I'd like to do with Revspin. I have a vision for creating the most accurate and helpful resource for finding your next rubber, blade, table, or robot. My aspiration is to be able to work on Revspin full-time (and eventually hire a team), and grow it to its full potential:
- Better filters for finding your ideal equipment, with granular control
- Equipment recommendation engine
- Improvements to the ratings algorithms to improve the rating accuracy
- Lab measurements of equipment's properties to scientifically measure their characteristics more objectively
- ...and a myriad of possibilities
Support Revspin's Growth
If you've personally found the platform helpful for you, you can support Revspin to reach this vision when you buy your equipment from the Revspin Shop (which has a network of suppliers across the USA) or Smash Table Tennis Shop (what I stock locally in Canada). As Revspin grows, I'll be able to make the leap to work on Revspin full-time, unlocking more innovations. ✨🚀
I whole-heartedly thank you for your support. 🙏
Sincerely,
Arthur Lui
